Bill's 'Age Well, Together' Story

William ‘Bill’ Dickinson Volunteer, Whiddon Easton Park Men's Shed

After living on his own in the local community, Bill joined the Whiddon Easton Park Men’s Shed to enjoy the social connection of the program and provide support to a cause he knows makes a positive impact on attendees.

Bill spoke to the importance of the activities at the Men’s Shed for men who may be feeling lonely in particular:

“I think the activities here are important, because it’s not good to see the guys sitting in their rooms all day watching TV. It gets them out and about chatting to people. I encourage a few of my mates to come down and enjoy a few hours out of the house. Having a hobby is important because it gives people in older lives purpose and meaning in life. I’ve seen a few of the guys lose their wives and they feel they have nothing to live for. That just isn’t the case, we’re all here to support them.”

“We’ve made a workbench, made to the perfect height so no one is bending over and hurting their back. The bench has helped us build and paint a fence which the guys are halfway through completing. Some of the guys are doing things they’ve never done before, and they can do it.”

Bill has made a lot of friends through the Easton Park Men’s Shed, not just people in care but the nurses and the staff who he was gotten to know over the years.

During International Men's Health Week, Bill’s contribution to the Men’s Shed highlights the importance of camaraderie, community, and volunteering in promoting men's health and tackling loneliness as we grow older.
