Nic's 'Age Well, Together' Story
Nic Starrenburg – Volunteer, Whiddon Easton Park Men's Shed
11 June 2023
Nic has been a part of the Easton Park Men’s Shed for the past 6 months and in that time has assisted Whiddon residents and members of the community with a range of key activities to promote social connection among men who are looking to explore their hobbies.
Nic was asked to join the Men’s Shed after his daughter Nickola, who works at Whiddon showed the team photos of Nic’s handy work and projects he was currently working on. As an engineer, Nic was the perfect fit for someone hands-on to lead the Men’s Shed.

Whiddon’s Easton Park Men’s Shed often has 3-4 projects running at once, at the moment the guys are building a putt-putt course which the residents will get to enjoy when it’s finished. Attendees of the program are already taking bets on who will score the first hole-in-one.
When they’re not building something new, you can catch the guys playing a game of darts, keeping a thriving veggie garden going, and on the odd occasion even enjoying a barbecue and a beer.
Nic credits the program with helping those who may need the encouragement, get out of their house or room, get some fresh air, and bond with the Men’s Shed group:
“They’re a really good bunch of guys. We’ve got Bill who’s one of the other volunteers, there’s Larry who looks after the garden and he’s here every morning watering the garden before I even get here, he is just fantastic! The guys just want to do something they’ve been doing all their lives, from hanging picture frames, mowing lawns and building things, the Men’s Shed gives them that opportunity,” explains Nic.
During International Men's Health Week, Nic’s involvement in the Men’s Shed highlights the importance of camaraderie, community, and volunteering in promoting men's health and tackling loneliness as we grow older.
