Karn Nelson is the Executive General Manager, Consumer & Positive Ageing at Whiddon, an industry-leading, not-for-profit aged care organisation caring for close to 3,000 people through Residential Aged Care, Community Care and Retirement Living.Karn holds more than 20 years’ experience in strategic marketing and innovation in Australia and Internationally in a range of sectors from health, wellness, retail professional services and government.
Karn is responsible for Whiddon’s research and innovation programs, with current efforts focused on improving wellbeing and quality of life for care recipients, contributing to Whiddon’s quality improvement and service excellence.
Karn’s passion for innovative practices in care has led to her involvement in the introduction, adaption and creation of opportunities that provide increased social participation and meaningful activity for Whiddon residents.
Karn played a crucial role in the design and development of Whiddon’s Mylife Care Model, a Relationship Based Care (RBC) approach which was one of the three inaugural winners of the Aged Care Quality Agency’s National Excellence awards, as well as several other award winning and evidence-based wellbeing programs.
Through her strategic industry experiences, Karn prepared the submission to the Royal Commission where Whiddon was invited to give evidence as an exemplary organisation for its holistic and relationship-based care approach.
With Whiddon’s services extending across metropolitan, regional, and remote New South Wales and South East Queensland, Karn’s role involves looking at current research and turning this into innovative models of care and new practice for Older Australians increasingly aged population.
Karn currently holds a position as the Deputy Chair of Holdsworth Community Services and represents Whiddon as a Board and Founding member of Ending Loneliness Together (ELT). Passionate about the ELT program and its mission, Karn works collaboratively to combat loneliness amongst older people living in the community and in residential aged care.
